Abstract

Techniques found to yield the most successful results for the optical and transmission electron microscopy of titanium and titanium alloys are described. For optical microscopy both mechanical and electropolishing are employed; a special etching procedure is described for revealing grain sizes of the order of 1 micron. Both chemical polishing and electropolishing techniques are presented for preparing foils for transmission electron microscopy. Examples of the structures revealed by the various techniques are given.
