Abstract

This chapter discusses the consistency of both traditional and new approaches to the measurement of the performances of design and engineering teams with the requirements of concurrent engineering; a conceptual framework for the design and operating development of the performance measurement system, determining the conditions under which each technique is most viable. It reviews the conceptual requirements of a performance measurement system for product development teams, with a special reference to the requirements of concurrent engineering. Performance measurement has two main objectives: (1) supporting decision making, through the control of the consistency between actual and planned results; (2) motivating people toward the objectives of the firm. The chapter also presents an integrated approach to the design of the performance measurement system of product development teams.
