Abstract

The meticulous attention to technique that is required when performing body CT in infants and children cannot be overemphasized. The paucity of abdominal fat in children and their occasional lack of cooperation may necessitate use of sedation, bowel-opacifying agents, and enhancement with intravenous contrast medium for delineation of normal and pathologic anatomy. Fast scan speeds of five seconds or less are mandatory. When appropriately utilized and meticulously performed, body CT scanning in children can be an extremely valuable procedure in providing significant diagnostic information that is not otherwise available, and may be the definitive diagnostic procedure in many instances.
