Abstract

1. 1. The indications for exploration of the common bile duct have been given. 2. 2. Routine dilatation of the papilla of Vater in commonduct surgery and temporary external drainage of the duct by catheter is advocated. 3. 3. A satisfactory surgical technique is given in detail. 4. 4. Some experimental and considerable clinical evidence is given that dilatation of the papilla of Vater can be carried out with safety. 5. 5. It is probable that dilatation of the outlet of the pathologically distended common bile duct may last some time. 6. 6. It would appear that dilatation of the normal papilla in dogs is not permanent.
