Abstract

In this paper, we describe a technique for making ZigBee devices power efficient. ZigBee technology, which is a recently emerged network communication protocol based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, has a mesh network topology with a low cost, power-effective, low data rate and multi hop data transmission. Potential ZigBee applications include home automation, wireless sensors, interactive toys, smart badges and remote controls. This paper provides a brief description of this standard including the Physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layer. The application areas of ZigBee which are determined from its advantages and disadvantages are also discussed. The issues pertaining to the design, layout and process variations are also addressed. This paper will describe the characteristics of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, RF design considerations of the PHY, ZigBee network topologies, and present a representative ZigBee application.
