Abstract

In this Technical Note, four foil sample preparation methodologies were investigated with “sandwich” like foil electrodes, which enabled the visualization of two-dimensional pit morphologies. The new procedure included the use of nitric acid to prepassivate the foil as the first step; polishing the top layer of the side edges of the foil after the foil was sandwiched in between two glass slides; and immersing the corners in nitric acid before experiments. This new foil sample preparation methodology eliminated pitting artifacts at the corners of the foil samples and provided reliable and reproducible experimental results.
