Abstract

A production-scale chemical vapor deposition process for applying ceramic coatings to large composite structures has been designed. The design approach has used information from a variety of areas: thermodynamics, kinetics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, mass transfer and process control. By using this approach, the good performance characteristics of smaller pilot-scale coating processes have been retained. The design was originally developed for applying ceramic coatings, but it is also applicable to infiltrating porous composites.
