Abstract

Abstract In recent years panel data are increasingly used in the estimation of economic efficiency. Although one can estimate technical efficiency for each production unit using cross-sectional data, the estimates of technical efficiency can not control for individual-specific effects. One has to assume that these individual-specific effects are identical for all production units. On the other hand, when panel data are available one can separate technical (in)efficiency from individual-specific effects. Panel studies can be classified into two groups in terms of their treatment of technical efficiency.
