Abstract

Colectomy is the definitive treatment of diverticulitis, consisting of surgical resection of the pathophysiologic origin of the disease process. The decision to proceed with elective colectomy is often a nuanced decision. The data and consensus recommendations have evolved over time and no longer simply advocate for surgery after the first episode of complicated or second episode of uncomplicated diverticulitis.
