Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to examine the particular part which technical educational institutions can play in the training of electrical engineers and the other personnel of the electrical industry with whom engineers are associated. The facilities already available in technical institutions are examined critically, and suggestions are made for the improvements that are necessary. The value of the social and athletic facilities in a college in the development of the abilities and characters of students is also analysed. Emphasis is laid on the need for adequate provision of part-time courses for professional engineers in technical colleges, and the particular difficulties to be overcome to achieve this are examined. A course of a type different from those existing, designed to satisfy some of industry's requirements, is described. The need for better provision for post-graduate courses is explained, and suggestions are made for fulfilling some of these requirements and those for investigation and research. The training of personnel other than professional engineers is also dealt with, and suggestions are made for extensions in the existing provisions for craftsmen and technicians. There are described, briefly, the outlines of three groups of courses leading to ?Higher National Certificates in Electrical Technology? suited for technicians engaged in the manufacturing industry, in generation and supply, and in radio and television servicing. New types of City and Guilds of London Institute courses are also outlined.
