Abstract

SummaryElectroplating has become an increasingly important process in the manufacture of coinage. Coating and substrate materials and dimensions can be tailored to meet customer requirements for physical dimensions, colour, serviceability, coin selector response and cost. The manufacture of barrel plated coins is described, with particular attention to the technical challenges that were met at the stages of substrate preparation, nickel and bronze electroplating, heat treatment, burnishing, minting and quality control. Also shown is the combination of products from the two processes to make bicolour coins.
