Abstract

The tearing mode instability of an electron current beam with finite kinetic energy density of the current carriers is studied. It is shown that the finite kinetic energy of the current carriers has a stabilizing influence on the tearing of solid beams. This may have some relevance to recent experiments on runaway dominated and electron beam injected toroidal discharges.
