Abstract

Abstract In the remote arctic region of Alaska, personnel safety, spill prevention, and response planning are of the highest priority to oil exploration and production companies. Alaska Clean Seas (ACS) is the oil spill response cooperative on the Alaska North Slope, whose current Area of Operations extends from the Canadian border to the Chukchi Sea, and the first 167 miles of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Conditions are extremely harsh; locations are remote, and the environment is highly sensitive. In each field operating area, Spill Response Teams function under the guidance of ACS staff personnel. Qualified Team Leaders must be present among the Spill Response Teams to provide direct oversight and supervision of the team members. Responses may broken down into three levels, similar in concept to the three-tiered model used throughout the response community.
