Abstract

Becker and Kniep (Kniep, 1986) both include economics as one of the systems to be addressed in the middle level curriculum. For most of us, our economic behaviors provide the most striking and obvious ex amples of our individual interdependence with the rest of the world (p. 439). The study of a global economic system helps students unravel some of the com plexities of economics by focusing on other countries, their motivations as con sumers, and their decision-making processes. By examining the interrelationship of economics and everyday life, middle level students are able to see their place in the economic chain. Concepts such as market ing, importing and exporting, foreign cur rency exchange, the stock market, and international trade form the basis of an inter disciplinary unit on economics for seventh or eighth grade students.
