Abstract

The query of how to teach vocabulary for both formal and informal language in a second language classroom leads us to different theories, approaches, and techniques. The dominant theories in the field recognize the difficulty students face when learning about vocabulary and trying to distinguish between formal and informal usage in a variety of settings. Another perspective focuses on the learning of a new language where one can sit in a classroom setting working through exercises via formal language learning or engage with a new language at home with family and friends via informal language learning. Presently, the literature leans more towards teaching vocabulary in context using the communicative approach which can allow for both formal and informal language learning to occur. This approach will help learners to grasp the different collocations of use in any setting. In turn, they will begin to use them appropriately. This entry discusses how to distinguish formal from informal vocabulary, difficulties students face when learning about formal and informal language usage, and provides recommendations for recognizing the patterns of both formal and informal language.
