Abstract

The article defends teaching theology and religion in schools and colleges. Theology need not and I argue should not, be seen as a confessional defence of one religious system. It should be seen as a global and historical study of ideas of an ultimate spiritual reality. There are many ways of doing this. It is necessary to concentrate on two or three traditions, though a general overview, admittedly more superficial, can still be helpful. The goal is to extend just appreciation, critical thinking, and informed understanding of human spiritual thought and practice in both its negative and positive aspects.
