Abstract
Early in 2003, every Australian household received a package from the Commonwealth Government in an effort to inform all Australian citizens about what was being done to look out for Austra lia and protect our way of life from a possible terrorist threat (Commonwealth Government of Australia, 2003, p.I ). The package also contained a letter from the Prime Minister asking all Australians to help preserve the Australian way of life by being alert to behaviour that might be suspicious. It also contained a fridge magnet. The Prime Minister reminded Australians that in the aftermath of terrorist attacks such as September 11 and the Bali bombing, we now live in a more dangerous world. The Australian way of life, according to the Prime Minister, is based on a strong and vigorous democracy in which Australians respect and understand the many cultures and religions that make up our society.
