Teaching the history of interpretation

Abstract

Unlike rhetoric and theatre, interpretation has settled for a history so limited and dull that it is hardly worth teaching. By including “the oral tradition” of literature, however, we can explore a broader and more interesting history of interpretation, one ranging from ancient India and China to Europe, Africa, and the Indian Americas and on to modern folklore, poetry experiments, and readers theatre.
