Abstract

Small-group academic discussions are frequently used in US university classrooms; however, ESL/EFL textbooks often lack authentic expressions for such contexts. This chapter focuses on common pragmatic acts in academic discussions such as agreements, disagreements, and clarifications. The chapter explains how teachers can create activities using pragmatic expressions from a spoken academic corpus such as the Michigan Corpus of Academic Spoken English. The goal of these activities is to raise students’ awareness of these pragmatic acts and provide students with a range of authentic expressions to navigate through small-group discussions at universities.
