Abstract

S everal studies have attempted to define language differences between black children and white children or to determine the interaction between dialect and reading performance; but very little research has attempted to evaluate the effectiveness of reading materials written for black children. This paper describes such a research project and defines some of the specific problems in teaching reading to black subjects. The hypothesis tested was: Emphasis upon teaching selected reading behaviors will have a significant and positive effect upon the reading achievement of black children who require remedial reading instruction.
