Abstract

Two nutrition units, one for elementary and one for secondary students, were developed which incorporate the Teams-Games-Tournaments (TGT) teaching technique. The technique alters the traditional classroom structure and gives each student an equal opportunity to achieve and to receive positive reinforcement from peers by capitalizing on team cooperation, the popularity of games, and the spirit of competitive tournaments. The TGT nutrition units were implemented for three weeks in the elementary classes and for four weeks in the high school classes. Significant increases in nutrition knowledge were measured in all classes. Students were enthusiastic about learning nutrition by TGT; and teachers indicated that the nutrition units were innovative and easy to implement, required little teacher preparation, and complemented the existing curriculum. The significant improvement in students' nutrition knowledge and the positive student and teacher response indicate that nutrition can be taught effectively by the TGT technique.
