Abstract

ABSTRACT The Council on Social Work Education’s Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) supports the mission of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to increase the number of individuals who are trained to work with underrepresented and underserved persons with or at risk for mental health or substance abuse disorders. This teaching note is a critical autoethnographic investigation of a doctoral MFP alum reflecting and sharing her journey to overcome barriers to advance her nontraditional social work research agenda in a predominantly White institution. It is the intention that this teaching note provides suggestions of how to maintain a research agenda in a teaching university. Discussion of the author’s MFP affiliation, career trajectory, community effect, research findings, and remarks regarding the necessity of MFP will be provided.
