Abstract

Researchers do not agree on the definition or form of the conditional sentence. Additionally, English grammar textbooks have been criticized for their simplistic presentation of conditional sentences and for limiting their meaning to the likelihood of an event taking place. However, researchers agree that English conditional sentences are among the most complex and challenging structures for English language learners. This entry explores some of the research on the meaning of conditional sentences, identifies their types, investigates their presentation in grammar books, and offers some advice concerning the best way to introduce and teach the meaning of conditionals to English language learners.
