Teaching Gulf medical students about chemical solutions by means of problem-solving laboratory practicals

Abstract

Experience has shown that new medical students in the United Arab Emirates University often face difficulties in understanding many basic concepts in chemistry, such as concentration and dilution of solutions. To remedy these problems, we have evolved a series of simple problem-solving practicals about chemical solutions for medical students to perform at the beginning of their course. The design of these practicals is described and their impact on student learning is discussed.
