She combines her earlier experience as a teacher and editor, and her current role as a leading businesswoman, with a generous interest in young people. She attended Cambridge University and subsequently travelled worldwide for The Geographical Magazine, specializing in areas of environmental disaster and economic development. She set up a system of book societies with overseas agencies, and later became chief executive of the Marshall Cavendish Mail Order firm.
