Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of multiword expressions and their uses in language teaching and learning. Multiword expressions can be taught at practically any language proficiency level, and they can be found in any type of discourse and text. The topics covered in this chapter that are likely to be of relevance to teaching multiword expressions anywhere in the world include the following: the reasons that multiword expressions are difficult to learn and use an overview of effective and ineffective teaching techniques a few key pointers for focused and deliberate instruction in highly frequent phrasal verbs expressions for speaking phrases for academic writing.
