Abstract

An undergraduate course that considers intrafamily abuse across the life span is described, and methods of handling problems that may arise in teaching this course are suggested. The course format combines class discussions, lectures by the instructor, assigned readings, guest speakers, and an empirical research project. The content examines general issues relevant to all abuse; the prevalence, forms, causes, dynamics, short- and long-term effects of abuse; and characteristics of the abused and abusers at each developmental stage. The importance of developmental psychology for an understanding of abuse is emphasized. Potential problems concern class discussions and the sensitive nature of the material. Evaluations indicate that the course effectively meets its goals.
