Abstract

This special issue of Teaching and Teacher Education is dedicated to work undertaken as part of the Teaching and Learning Research Programme (TLRP), a major investment in education research in the United Kingdom. The generic phase of TLRP ran from 1999 until 2009, with some additional projects on technology enhanced learning (TEL) continuing into 2012. Total funds of nearly £40 million were provided by a range of national bodies including the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) (which coordinated the programme), the Higher Education Funding Council for England, and the governments of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and, for the TEL phase, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
