Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate a relationship between teacher characteristics such as sex and teaching experience and pupils' academic achievement. The results showed a relationship between teacher characteristics and academic achievement such that pupils taught by female and long experienced teachers performed significantly better than pupils taught by male and teachers with short teaching experience. This was the case not only in the pupils' overall performance, but also in subjects such as mathematics, English, science and social studies. The sample consisted of 2559 pupils (1517 girls and 1042 boys), 662 (587 women and 84 men) school teachers and 87 (52 women and 35 men) standard seven teachers drawn from a stratified sample of 51 schools selected from across Botswana. Teachers were administered a questionnaire, whereas pupils' scores were based on their performance in their final national examinations results.
