Abstract

The study aimed at investigating the attitudes of secondary school teachers and students towards STEM approach. The study is a follow up of the social initiative of SASTRA University, India, where STEM labs were set up in rural schools to promote STEM education. Data for this chapter came from 10 schools where the labs were set up in the first phase of the STEM project. The tool of the study was two questionnaires which were validity and reliability verified. Thirty-three secondary school teachers and 136 students were administered the questionnaire after one year of exposure to the lab. Descriptive techniques were used to analyze the data. Results of the study showed positive student and teacher attitude toward STEM education. In light of results of the study, the researcher highly recommends using STEM approach in teaching subjects in schools as being crucial to personal development and citizenship in the 21st century. The study also recommends the ‘adoption' of a school, or a cluster of schools, by a local STEM industry/enterprise, university, NGOs, and other public, private bodies.
