Abstract

Adsorptions of diphenyl ditelluride (DPDT) and 1-naphthyl ditelluride (DNDT) on silver and gold surfaces have been examined by means of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The aromatic rings of DPDT and DNDT appear to have a vertical orientation on Ag and Au surfaces. It was found that the TeTe bonds of aromatic ditellurides were cleaved upon adsorption on the silver and gold surfaces. The vibrational wavenumbers and bond dissociation energies were estimated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations for a more convincing assignment. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
