Abstract

At the 2011 AOAC International Annual Meeting, the Technical Divisions on Reference Materials and Laboratory Management arranged a workshop focused on the needs for and applications of reference materials in laboratory accreditation programs. Regulators and trading partners are increasing the demand for accreditation of control laboratories according to ISO/IEC 17025 ‘‘General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories.’’ As a result, groups such as the Analytical Laboratory Accreditation Criteria Committee of AOAC International have developed guides to aid in the interpretation of ISO/IEC 17025. One key demand for the standard requires laboratories to demonstrate method accuracy by proving adequate trueness and precision through method validation, method verification, estimating measurement uncertainty, establishing metrological traceability, and proving adequate laboratory routine performance. Reference materials play a key role in these crucial processes for laboratory accreditation.
