Abstract
Transport Control Protocol (TCP) is known to have poor performance over unreliable wireless links where packet losses due to transmission errors are misinterpreted as indications of network congestion. Hence, the performance of TCP over such wireless networks without any modification would suffer significant degradation of throughput and high interactive delay. First, the recent development of wireless networks and the current problems with TCP are introduced. Then, the enhancements of TCP performance in wireless networks are categorized into several approaches and their advantages and disadvantages are summarized. Finally, the evolution of wireless networks in the future is described and the challenges of future research are discussed and analyzed.
