Abstract

Three major areas of numerical analysis stand in close relationship: optimization, approximation, and boundary and initial value problems for differential equations. This chapter will present some of these relations, and show how methods developed for one of these areas can at times be applied profitably to another. For example, the methods previously described, for solving optimization problems, may be used successfully on computer installations to solve boundary value problems for ordinary and partial differential equations.
