Abstract

An estimate of the frequency with which serials change title was made by analyzing a random sample of 1000 titles from the lsit of current subscriptions at a major university, and of approximately 250 titles received by a medium-sized public library. The results were crossed-checked by a further analysis of subsamples of science, humanities, and social science serials from the university sample. The data suggest that the rate at which serials change title may be something approaching a constant. This constant, dubbed Taylor's Constant, is estimated at .013 title changes per serial per year.
