Abstract

AbstractThis plain brick building, situated in a yard on one side of the village street in Gomersal, was erected by a member of the Taylor family, who had the following, if he were not the founder, of a sect. He was an eccentric person, and like his successor-Joshua Taylor, (“Hiram Yorke” of “Shirley”) a man of strong individuality. It is said that fourteen persons were interred in the graveyard of this little chapel. There is an inscription on one of the gravestones which is strongly coloured with bitter sentiments against the Wesleyans of that day. This chapel, which is now converted into a joiner's shop, was the scene of the prayer meetings and revival services described in “Shirley.”
