Abstract

A purely ionic regime (PIR) of charge emission from Taylor cones of ionic liquids (ILs) held in a vacuum exists, giving ion beams of high quality. This regime is favored by ionic liquids of high electrical conductivity K and high surface tension γ. The present search for such ILs relies on an improved form of the capillary rise method using sample volumes smaller than 0.1 cm3. Prior and new observations are used to confirm the important role of both γ and K for PIR operation from conventional capillary electrospray sources.
