Abstract

This paper provides a framework for categorizing and comparing various measures of financial interconnectedness. In particular, we distinguish between network and non-network measures. Network measures map links between institutions using either direct contracts or indirect estimations; the resulting network can be described using graph theory. Indirect measures, meanwhile, provide aggregate connectedness measures, often relying on regression analysis. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of interconnectedness for financial stability.
