Abstract
A software engineering standards taxonomy was developed by a working group under IEEE sponsorship. The taxonomy is a scheme for the classification of standards, recommended practices, and guides in software engineering. The group started by preparing a project plan and a requirements statement. The plan was organized around a three phase process. The development of the taxonomy is discussed, difficulties encountered and how well the requirements statement was met. A sketch of the taxonomy is presented.
