Abstract

Cordia crenata, originally described from plants cultivated in Egyptian gardens, is shown to be widespread in NE and E Africa and also to be present in Arabia, Iran and India. C. zedambae and C. chisimajensis are new synonyms. Geographically correlated variation supports the subdivision of the species into two subspecies, the widespread and often cultivated C. crenata ssp. crenata, and the East African C. crenata ssp. meridionalis, ssp. nov. Descriptions, illustrations and a map of distribution of both subspecies are given, as well as the most commonly used vernacular names.
