Abstract

A comparison of the external morphology and spores clearly distinguished Huperzia lucidula (Michaux) Trevis. in northeast Asia and North America in terms of leaf shape, leaf margin, distribution of sto- mata on leaves, and spore shape. Therefore, the northeast Asian plants should be treated as a separate species, H. asiatica (Ching) B.-Y. Sun & J. Lim. In addition, we believe that H. javanica (Sw.) C. Yang, regarded as con- specific or infraspecific with H. serrata (Thunb.) Trevis., is a distinct species based on the presence of a leaf pet- iole and serrated leaf margins, and the shape of the gemmiferous branchlets.
