Abstract

Three species of Callophycus are described. Callophycus serratus (Harvey ex Kuetzing) Silva is widespread along the western and southern rims of the Pacific Ocean from the Philippines to Tonga, while C. densus (Sonder) Kraft comb. nov. and C. tridentifer Kraft sp. nov. are limited to the Australian east coast. Although C. serratus appears to represent a relatively primitive level of evolution, with small, aggregated cystocarps and comparatively simple carposporophytes, the two eastern Australian species appear to be more advanced and to represent the ends of two divergent lines of development within the genus. The three Pacific taxa are compared to the five temperate Australian species of Callophycus, and the habits of cystocarpic axes of all eight are illustrated and contrasted.
