Abstract
The present work estimated the conditions of infilling of the Jacuipe estuary, located in the north coast of Bahia, using geochronology 137Cs and 210Pb combined methods and verification of accommodation sediments spaces still exist. Two sedimentation rates were identified in this estuary more less 70 years old. The first, from 3,7 mm y-1, refers to the natural conditions of sedimentation that occurred until the mid-1960s, and the second, more recent, is probably due to anthropogenic influences in the watershed which increased the contribution sediments to 6,0 mm y-1. It was estimated that Jacuipe estuary, with the remaining accommodation space of 6.97 x 10(6) m³ , can be completely filled in less than 300 years. This time interval may drop by half if it continues the current rate of sedimentation and hydrological changes of confirmation provided in this basin
