Abstract

HE and ammonia stimulate the efflux of endogenous Tau and other neuroactive amino acids independently of producing changes in the cellular amino acid content, and by mechanisms not coupled to cell volume changes. Ammonia does not potentiate the HE-induced changes in amino acid content and transport. Cell volume regulation does not appear to be changed in HE rats, but is impaired in HE rats exposed to an extra ammonia challenge.
