Abstract

Abstract The relationships among task complexity, patterns of dependency relationships, and influence were examined by analyzing the survey responses of staff nurses in a large general hospital. Strategic contingency theory was used to develop a set of hypotheses concerning power / dependency relationships, and task interdependency theory was used to develop a set of hypotheses concerning interdependency relationships. Staff nurses perceived both power / dependency relationships and interdependencies among themselves and others with whom they regularly worked. Hypothesis testing analyses indicated support for task interdependency theory over strategic contingency theory. Implications for theory and future research are discussed.
