Abstract

First, the good news. Tascam's DA-30 DAT deck is not just a repackaged consumer model DAT machine with rack-mount hardware added. Rather, it is a well-designed, rugged stereo mastering deck with the durability and programmability of a top-flight analog two-track machine, along with better sound quality for less money than its open-reel analog counterparts. The bad news is that, precisely because DAT was originally designed as a consumer format, even such a wellconceived, well-engineered DAT as the DA-30 may not be appropriate as the single mastering deck for a professional studio.
