Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine and evaluate new approaches on writing history textbooks in the light of the recent developments took place in the developed world and make recommendations for Turkish history textbooks. Research carried out in 2011 and national and international literature literature concerning history textbooks writing process examined. In the light of the data, it can be said that the following factors have effect on writing history textbooks which are presentation of historical factual knowledge, historical thinking skills, constructivist approach in the teaching of history, gender, controversial issues, democracy and development on human rights. The Turkish history textbooks are being examined in the light of the above factors, it can be said that there are important drawbacks in the Turkish history textbooks. To increase the quality of the Turkish history textbooks in Turkey, the above factors should be paid attention in writing history textbooks.
