Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify the opinions of teachers and students about the use of historical films, TV series and cinemas in history teaching. In the research, the questionnaire and the interview developed by the researcher are used as data collection tools. The questionnaire is carried out with 439 students from different secondary schools in Trabzon city centre during 2010-2011 educational year. Moreover, thirteen history teachers were interviewed so as to clarify their perceptions about the issue and preferences as to whether or not they use films and TV series during history lessons. The study shows students and teachers think that historical movies and TV series have important contribution to history learning. However, these materials are not widely used in schools. As a result of the research, some recommendations have been made about the issue. This study emphasizes that integrating films and TV series into classroom facilities would increase success and interest in history lessons as long as they are used in line with well planned activities.
