Abstract

Cancer The population of Tasmanian devils has been dropping rapidly, leading to their designation as endangered species. The species has been succumbing to a transmissible cancer called devil facial tumor disease. In a Perspective, Patchett and Woods discuss the emerging ideas about how this disease has evolved to be transmitted between individuals. Recent findings demonstrate how these tumors evade the host immune system, revealing potential strategies for therapeutic intervention. Science , this issue p.
