Abstract

SYNOPSIS Towards the end of 1995, granular herbicides were introduced in South African forestry. Traditionally, weed control was done by manual slashing or herbicides were applied by knapsack sprayer. Targeted, spot herbicide application is more environmentally friendly, less expensive and easier manageable than traditional weed control methods. Three formulations of hexazinone each at four rates, including a control of manual slashing were applied to two different crop species, i.e. Pinus radiata D. Don and P. elliottii Engelm., planted in herbaceous shrub vegetation (fynbos/macchia). Two granular formulations of hexazinone, a 10% and 20% active ingredient (a.i.) and a 24% liquid formulation, were tested together with a control. Herbicide rates were applied on equivalent a.i. basis to each tree for the three formulations, so that equivalent a.i. rates could be statistically compared. Tree height and diameter were measured three and twelve months after application, to determine efficacy of the treatments....
